Board updates

The GFW School Board held a regular meeting on Monday, April 15, 2024. A summary of the meeting is below.

School and Community Recognition
The Board and Dr. Horton recognized MnDOT District 7 for their generous contribution of $165,000 towards the new school project to help create safe routes to school for all GFW students and enhancing accessibility to the entire community. 

“This significant contribution from MnDOT District 7 is a testament to their commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our students and residents,” said Dr. Horton. “By partnering with us on this endeavor, MnDOT District 7 has demonstrated their dedication to fostering communities where our children can thrive, learn, and play in a safe environment.”

Angela Piltaver, AICP, LEED AP attended the meeting and accepted the award on behalf of MnDOT District 7. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared that the project was important their team.  

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Horton thanked everyone who attended the groundbreaking celebration on April 12. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the GFW Community with lots of fun for everyone. He also shared some videos and photos of renderings of the new school design. The project is on time and on budget with dirt being moved on the site and planting will begin on the school farm soon. 

School Reports
Principal Jacobson shared that things are busy at GFW Middle School and High School with students feeling more energized for the end of the year. Students in grade 8-11 have pre-registered for classes for next year and information about registration will be shared soon. Students have been able to have fun at concerts, music events, NHS, Middle School Student of the Month celebrations, and much more.

FFA Students celebrated Ag day by driving tractors to school and even paraded by the elementary school. MCA Testing is taking place now with some students preparing to take the ACT. With the end of the school year approaching, prom, graduation, and other fun events are coming up soon.

Board members shared reports from committees and ongoing work. 

Logo and Mascot Updates
The board heard updates on a survey that will be launched to the community about changing the mascot name. The same basic logo design will be used but the name will change. The survey will be open until May 3 at 6 p.m. This community input is instrumental in shaping the future of GFW Public Schools.

Consent Agenda, Resolutions and Action Items
The board approved the consent agenda.

The board approved the GFW Logo Survey. 

The board heard a recommendation from Dr. Horton for the fifth grade to remain in Gibbon for the 24-25 school year to limit students having to do multiple moves in the coming years. 

The board approved keeping grade 5 at the GFW Elementary school building for 2024-25.

The board approved the 2024-25 Registration Guide for GFW High School. There will be additional college credit options offered and opportunities to explore career pathways. 

The board approved current PreK-12 bids for the facility project. 

The board approved policy changes. 

The board approved the revised 2024-25 budget. 

The board approved exempt work guidelines for 24-25.

The board approved the acceptance of donations.
